The attack happened around 7:30 a.m. on the first day of spring semester classes at Perry High School in Iowa on Thursday (January 4). British media BBC reported this information.

Iowa police said four students and an administrator were shot at the school. They have been admitted to hospital. Besides, improvised explosive devices have been seized from the spot.

Mitch Mortvet, assistant director of the Iowa Police Department of Criminal Investigation, said the deceased student was approximately 12 years old. He was a sixth grader. And the student who attacked is 17 years old. His name is reported to be Dylan Butler. After shooting the others, he is believed to have shot himself.

He said Butler made several posts on social media at the time of the attack. However, it is not yet clear what led to the attack. The matter is being investigated.

Dallas County Sheriff Adam Infante told reporters that fortunately there were very few students in the building at the time. Otherwise, the number of casualties would have increased.
