Pompeo’s reaction to Baghdad rocket attack ‘suspicious’

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzad said the attack on any diplomatic establishment was unacceptable.

“The US military presence in the Middle East is a source of instability in the region,” he told Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

Khatibzadeh made the remarks in a Twitter message on Monday in response to Mike Pompeo’s claim that Iran was behind the rocket attack on the Green Zone in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad. He says Tehran is vehemently rejecting Pompeo’s remarks to rekindle tensions in the Middle East.

A spokesman for Iran’s foreign ministry said no matter how hard the United States tried to shift responsibility for the instability in the Middle East, it would not work.

Earlier, Saeed Khatibzad also spoke at a press conference in Tehran on Monday. He said any attack on any diplomatic establishment was unacceptable to Iran.

However, the manner in which the statement was made by the US Secretary of State in the wake of the rocket attack in Baghdad has raised widespread suspicions. It appears the statement was made in advance and was released shortly after the attack. Khatibzade warned the Trump administration against escalating tensions in the Middle East.
