A joint program of ActionAid Bangladesh and television channel DBC News was organized on Friday in recognition of the participation of women in domestic service and the possibility of its far-reaching reflection in the Eighth Five Year Plan.

'Ishrat Jahan Urmi, Senior Staff Reporter, DBC News, conducted the program titled 'Eighth Five Year Plan: Recognition of Household Services'.

Senior Secretary of the Planning Commission of Bangladesh participated in the discussion. Shamsul Alam, Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS) Senior Research Fellow economist. Nazneen Ahmed and Farah Kabir, Country Director of ActionAid Bangladesh. Bailey Begum, a member of ActionAid Bangladesh's project partner Baneful Nari Dal, was also from Gaibandha. The discussion focused on how it is possible to evaluate women's household chores in the Eighth Five Year Plan.

Farah Kabir, Country Director of ActionAid Bangladesh, said, “We have been working in Gaibandha, Lalmonirhat and later in Bogra since 2016 and there we are trying to see how much a woman actually works through a time diary and get (the whole) picture. Then there are the tasks that are important to our family and how comfortable it is for women to be recognized or to have two or three people together. '

Bailey Begum, a member of the Baneful Nari Dal, shared her experience with the audience, saying that with the help of her husband and other family members, she has been able to get involved in income-generating activities outside of the household chores. Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS) Senior Research Fellow economist. Nazneen Ahmed gave a suggestion to ensure the recognition of women's domestic work. He said, “The Eighth Five-Year Plan should contain a guideline that will add to the number of labor hours spent on household services in each subsequent Labor Force Survey. Through this, women's household service work can be easily recognized.

Appreciating the various initiatives of ActionAid Bangladesh in ensuring the evaluation of women's household work and involving them in various income and innovative activities, Senior Secretary of the Planning Commission Dr. Shamsul Alam said, "We need to expand the market for women's empowerment."

He also remarked that the government of Bangladesh is thinking of increasing the employment of women in principle through market expansion in the Eighth Five Year Plan.
