'Initiatives taken to control commodity prices during Ramadan'

Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi said the government has taken steps to control the prices of daily necessities during Ramadan. He also said that twice as many products are being imported through TCB as compared to last year.

The Commerce Minister told reporters after a meeting with Indian Commerce Secretary Anup Adhikari and High Commissioner Doraisami at his office in the Secretariat.

He added, 'We have to bring some things in the month of Ramadan. For example, gram, dates, pulses. I am trying to bring these things twice as much as other years through TCB. We are preparing for this so that there is no problem in our market during Ramadan.

He also said that a meeting between the two secretaries would be held on Monday to discuss various issues including increasing facilities at the land ports of the two countries.

Calling on the people not to buy extra for fear of price hikes, the commerce minister said it would give traders a chance to raise prices. He said India would help in onion production in the dry season to address the shortage.

On the occasion of the golden jubilee of independence, besides enhancing trade relations between the two countries, India will also increase investment in Bangladesh, said Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi.
