Six months of military coup in Myanmar: Student protests

Myanmar's university students protest on the last day of a six-month military coup. On Saturday, the New York-based human rights group Human Rights Watch accused the country of crimes against humanity.

Myanmar's military junta seized power by overthrowing the elected government on February 1 this year. In the last six months of the military coup, university students in Mandalay, the country's second-largest city, protested in small groups.

On the same day, Brand Adams, Human Rights Watch's Asia director, said in a statement that the Myanmar army's use of violence to suppress anti-coup protests and arrest protesters was a crime against human rights.

At least 6,990 people have been arrested since the coup in Myanmar, according to the watchdog Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAP). At least 939 people were killed.
