13 killed in Kenya bombing

Kenya A bomb blast has killed at least 13 people. Several people were injured. A bus bomb blast near the town of Mandera in the northeastern part of the country killed at least two people on Monday.

Police in Kenya's northeastern Mandera County said in a statement that a 14-seater minibus struck a roadside bomb on Monday as it approached the town of Mandera, exploding. One person has been arrested on suspicion of involvement in the bombing.

The Nation media group quoted Brunei Rono, the region's police chief, as saying that a suspect linked to the bombing had been arrested and was being questioned.

Although no group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, Islamic State militant group al-Shabab is likely to be suspected.

The Somali militant group has carried out multiple attacks on security forces and public transport across the border in the past.

The group, which is linked to al-Qaeda, has been blamed for most of the attacks in the northeast and coastal areas. However, analysts say some of the violence was caused by local and political rivalries.

Al-Shabaab attacked a convoy in 2015 on the same road that was attacked on Monday. The convoy was carrying Ali Roba, the governor of Mandera. Three people, including two police officers, were killed in the incident.

Kenyan police say in nearby Lamu County, Al-Shabaab militants opened fire on several vehicles carrying judicial officials on Wednesday. Several people were injured in that incident.
