A Ukrainian security source confirmed Saturday's (December 30) operation targeted only military infrastructure, British media reported the BBC. The attack comes after 39 people were killed in a Russian attack on Ukraine on Friday (December 29).

Ukrainian security sources told the BBC that more than 70 drone strikes had been carried out on Russian targets "in response to Russian terrorist attacks on Ukrainian cities and civilians". The Russian president has been informed about the attack, his spokesman said.

On Saturday, Russia requested a meeting of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to discuss the deadly attack. During the meeting, Russia's UN envoy Vassily Nebenzia accused Ukraine of carrying out a "deliberate, indiscriminate attack against a civilian target". His comments were rejected by Ukraine's allies. The French ambassador said Ukraine was defending itself under UN law, while others, including the US and UK, said President Putin had started the conflict and should take responsibility for the Russian deaths.

The UN Assistant Secretary-General, Mohammed Khyari, "unequivocally condemned" the attacks by both sides, saying attacks against civilians and civilian infrastructure were "violations of international humanitarian law, unacceptable and must end now".
