An airplane landed on the runway of Tokyo's Haneda Airport, the capital of Japan, and caught fire.

The Japan Airlines plane caught fire while landing on Tuesday evening (January 2) local time.


According to the BBC, Japan Airlines Flight 516 was a Boeing 737-800 flying from Hokkaido's Shin-Chitose Airport to Tokyo's Haneda Airport. The flight was carrying 166 passengers and 6 crew members.


The flight departed Shin-Chitose at 12:45 and was scheduled to land in Haneda at 1:45. However when the flight reached Haneda at half past one, it had to make an emergency landing.


The plane reportedly suffered an engine failure. There was a risk of the aircraft catching fire due to the malfunction.


All passengers and crew members of the plane are said to be safe. After the plane made an emergency landing at Haneda Airport, it was safely stopped. The incident is under investigation.
